Lara scheduled her maternity shoot with me months ago. I always advise my clients that its best to shoot in their 7th month of pregnancy, since at that time, the baby bump is big enough to see, but mom isn't super uncomfortable. Having planned on shooting in the Boone/Blowing Rock area, I told Lara that we would keep our eyes on the weather. But a week ago, the weather called for sunny and 55 degrees, a rarity here in the mountains in January. It was looking to be the perfect day for an outdoor shoot... Then 3pm hit... and the clouds rolled in. Then the sleet began to fall. Hello Appalachian winters. When Lara and her husband showed up, I gave them the option of rescheduling for next week, with the hopes that the weather would be better. They looked at one another and shook their heads. I believe Kevin's exact words were, "We'll tough it out." And they did. The overcast day provided beautiful lighting, although, I know Lara froze a lot of the time. But they were troopers and the shoot was a success. Enjoy your preview Lara and Kevin!

Why do wedding photographers cost so much?!

I absolutely had to share this photographers (Nikki Mayday Photography) response to a post by a bride about the "outrageous" cost of a wedding photographer. While I do understand that $2500 or $3000 seems like a lot of money, you must think of the overall picture. A bride will spend a few thousand on a dress that she will wear once (maybe twice if she has a "trash the dress" photo session), she will spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on flowers that will die within a few days, she will choose to feed her guests filet, spending $40 or more per person. She will spend $3-10 per person on a cake (a few grand if she has a large guest list.) And, in order to make sure her day goes perfectly, she will spend AT LEAST $2,000 on a wedding planner... not to mention the band, the tux, the rings, the jewelry, etc. Most of those items, the wedding party and guests will enjoy for ONE day. ONE. A good photographer will capture all of those things you put so much time and effort in to. The photos will be something you cherish for your whole lifetime... Many brides dont realize this, but you will spend most of your wedding day with two people: Your new husband, and your photographer. There is much more that goes in to a wedding photographers day that just walking around taking pictures... there is editing, training, equipment (ah, I am cutting in to this photographers response, so I will let you read on.)

"Before I post my response, I want to THANK all of my brides who appreciate my work and think that I am worth the price. This response is not meant to offend anyone. I understand many people are on a budget, especially in this economy and I understand planning a wedding is both expensive and overwhelming. I always try my best to work with my couples and offer customized and discounted packaging options for those who are on a tighter budget.

I just want to state AGAIN, that being a photographer doesn’t mean that we wake up in the morning, photograph a wedding for 8 hours and then go home and our job is done. Those of us who are lucky enough to be able to support ourselves as full time photographers don’t just work as photographers. We are also SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS, which ALSO comes with the job of doing all of our own marketing, sales, accounting, scouting, art directing, managing our offices and studios, being our own webmasters, doing our own post production, designing, blogging, being students, being mentors, researching etc. etc. etc.

Sorry for the novel! Here was my response:

Dear Bride,

I am a wedding photographer in the Erie, PA area. Wedding season only last about 4 months here, so I photograph an average of 20 weddings per year for an average of $2500 / wedding. (which totals about $50,000 / year).

- That being said, I am a small business owner, so I pay all of my taxes, totaling about $15,000 / year which leaves me with a gross income of around $35,000

- Of that $35,000 I pay $600/month in rent for my small house and garage which I converted into my studio (which is where I would be editing your wedding images at) $35,000 – $7,200 = 27,800.

- Then I have my car, which I would use to get me to and from your wedding, which I pay $400/month for the lease, Plus $200/month in car insurance = $7,200 = $20,600.

- To get to your (and my other brides) wedding consultation, second wedding pre-consultation, the wedding itself, and to and from the printers I need gas money = $840/year = $19,760

- I also have insurance in case you sue me, or if any of your drunk guests would happen to break any of my equipment = $500 / year. = $19,260

- You also probably found me through my website, which I pay $30/month for hosting, and another $30/ month so that you can view your photos online and share the images with your friends and family = $720 = $18,540

- Or perhaps you found me through my advertisements in the newspaper or local bridal magazines, OR a bridal show that you attended that I paid to have a booth at $18,540 – $1,000 = $17,540

- I also pay for my own Health insurance in case I were to get hurt at your wedding = $250/month = $14,540

- and I pay for a second shooter for your wedding, so that you can have more images and different angles, as to make sure you get the best images possible at your wedding = $200/wedding = $10,540

- I also need to have a new pair of shoes every season because my shoes get worn out and dirty from season to season = $100/year = $10,440

- I need high speed internet so I can upload all of your images online, my home phone for my business and my cell phone so I can communicate with you = $2,500 / year = $7,940

- Oh yes, and I also pay a lawyer to make sure my contracts are iron clad and an accountant to make sure that I am paying all of the taxes I need… = $500/year = $7,440

- Sometimes I attend workshops and seminars to teach me how to better my business, and make my client happier (that would be you), as well as keep up on the trends and learn new techniques so that I can make sure you have the best quality images available.

That would technically leave me with about $7,000 / year to feed myself, buy groceries, pay for my heat and electricity, cloth myself etc…. BUT, usually I end up re-investing whatever I have left on upgrades and new equipment:

During your wedding, I bring my professional equipment that I use so that I can make sure you have the highest quality images.

- I have 2 Canon 5D Mark II cameras (because you always need a backup in case of a camera malfunction which would ruin your big days photographs) which cost $2500 / camera = $5000

-I also have quality lenses which can capture your special moments in low light situations:

Canon 24-70 f2.8 lens = $1,200

Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens = $1,300

Canon 50mm f1.4 lens = $500

Canon 100mm f2.8 macro = $600

Canon 10-22mm f3.5 wide angle = $800

- and I have speed lights to catch the fun moments at your reception:

- 2 Canon 580EX II = $1,200

- Also multiple battery back ups and memory cards, lens filters, light stands, umbrellas, light boxes, external battery packs and a bag to carry everything in. = $1,500

- Because this is equipment, sometimes I need to have it serviced or cleaned to make sure it is all working properly = $200

After spending 8-10 hours at your wedding, I then come home to my home office and spend about 20-25 hours editing your images, creating your album, blogging about your wedding, posting pictures on facebook, ordering you prints and burning your DVD’s

- I edit your photographs using a 27inch imac computer = $2500

- I edit your photographs on Adobe Lightroom = $200 and Adobe CS5 = $400 (for the upgrade) and $900 for the new program.

- and I print your DVD’s on a printer which = $300

- Using ink = $200/year

- and I buy the DVD’s and jewel cases your getting printed =$300 / year

-I archive all of your photographs on 2 2TB external hard drives = $500

- And I also back up all of my photographs online so if there was ever a fire in my office, you would never lose your photographs = $400/year

- I also have office expenses as far as buying paper, staples, envelopes, packaging, filing cabinets and files, etc. etc. etc.

- I also spend time and money ordering your prints and albums, paying

for shipping, going to the post office etc.

All of that being said, I’m usually in the hole at the end of the year, and take on many family portraits, senior portraits and corporate jobs in order to make ends meet.

Photography is my passion and my livlihood, and it is also EXPENSIVE. Yes, it seems like a lot of money for one day, but one day isn’t all we spend on your photographs or on our business. You will spend thousands of dollars on a wedding dress or flowers or a venue or on catering which you are going to have for only ONE DAY, but your photographs will be the only thing you have to remember that ONE DAY for the rest of your lives.

I’m extremely insulted by your craigslist post and hope this sheds a little light on why we charge $3000 for one day of your memories which are going to last you forever.

Falling Behind! Boone Commercial Photographer

I realized this week that I have let my blog sit lonely the past few months. When my site stats fall from 40-50 visits per day to 5 within the last month, there is something wrong. My new years goal as a photographer is to be more loyal to my clients (you have all been VERY loyal to me!)

It had gotten to the point where I was so busy, that my focus was on getting the images TO my clients, and then I would completely blank on the fact that I never blogged or shared the work with you all! For this, I am very sorry. I will get my head on straight, I promise!

I hope everyone had a wonderful christmas and will have a VERY happy new year! We have so much to be thankful for here at TaraMichelle Photography, and one of those things happens to be our loyal followers.

Oh, sweet little 6 week old baby boy E. This little man just captured my heart. He had decided that instead of sleeping for me, he would much rather stare the whole time, but we did manage to get some beautiful shots of him. Normally, when I photograph a newborn, I like to see him within his first week of birth. At that point, babies are still super sleepy and much more likely to be posable, but we managed... didnt we E?

This past weekend, I held a boudoir session at a special little farmhouse location just across the tennessee line. After a frigid cold snap just a few days earlier, the session ended up falling on a gorgeous and warmer than expected day with the light streaming in the windows beautifully. There are so many beautiful images from this session, it was difficult to choose which one I was going to feature

Boudoir sessions have become very popular among brides, couples anniversary gifts, and women just wanting a special photo session, something they have never done before. Its been all over the news, and it just happens to be one of my very favorite types of sessions. Every woman wants to feel beautiful and when I studied skin care and makeup, I wanted to use my training and talents to do just that. And its no different with photography. I truly feel that there is something beautiful about every woman, sometimes, it just takes the right vision, lighting and atmosphere to really make it pop.

Oh, and ladies, if you are planning a wedding, then you know traditionally the bride and groom trade gifts. What could be better than a boudoir photo session with a gorgeous image of his new bride for him?

As many of you know, I am a student with the Technical Photography department at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. This semester is my last and I graduate in December. I am excited and I am scared because if I fail at being a photographer, I have failed at the only thing I have ever been passionate about. That thought can put a lot of pressure on a girl!

This semester there was a class trip to New York City in order to attend the Shoot NYC and PDN conferences. In addition, due to connections our department head has in NYC, we visited Martha Stewart Studios, Industria, and attended the Scheimpflug halloween party.

It was an excellent trip, it was an awful trip.

Here are the things I learned about myself, about NYC and about the photo industry:

It doesnt always pay to be nice. Care about others, but dont forget to watch out for yourself, otherwise, you may end up sleeping on the floor or on a 3 foot long bench (when you're six feet tall) in a hotel room you paid for so that you can sleep on a bed.

NYC Pizza really is the best. the BEST.

Although you always see people walking around NYC in heels and amazingly awesome outfits, dont do it if you arent experienced at it. Especially when there is going to be a snow storm or your group can never seem to show up on time or leave those behind who dont truly want to be a part of it.

Trust yourself. Especially if you are one who has always looked out for yourself and been pretty good at getting around and staying safe. When you assume others know where you are going, and you dont look out for number one (and maybe a few of your companions), you end up walking a LOT further than you need to... in heels.

Martha Steward Studios... ROCK. And it wasn't even the photo studios that excited me. It was the size of the building, the openness, the light, the magazine layout planning, and all the cute and very well dressed gay men.

The men who photograph for Playboy aren't sleeze-balls. They can actually be quite nice, with nice accents, who are more than happy to tell you about the industry, invite you to a seminar, and allow you to shoot one of their models, give you pointers and then print out the image you shot for your portfolio.

I need to slow down and breath when I shoot.

People in the photo industry can be the BEST PEOPLE YOU WILL EVER MEET. Nice, willing to help out, and concerned when they see you sitting in a corner in order to get off your throbbing feet for a minute, giving you pointers on how to combat tired and sore feet.

I like NYC better at night than in the daylight. At night you see all the lights and the excitement. I was asked at one point if I was ready to pack my bags and move to the city. The exact thought in my head: "Oh GOD no! Not even for a second." My Actual Response: "No. NYC is just like any other big city, except less organized and more jumbled. I would love to be in a bigger city, but it needs to be a prettier city."

The food options are amazing. Chicken and Chorizo with Rice, Apple, field greens, balsamic and Brie Crepes, Turkey and Brie sandwiches... not to mention the presentation of everything.

Dont expect to spend less than $10 for a basic grab and go lunch. Food and alcohol is SO much more expensive in the city... unless you want a bagel or a slice of pizza.

NYC Bagels are amazing. Not only are they ginormous, but the vendors dont skimp on cream cheese and a bagel with cream cheese and a coffee will cost you $3 even.

New Yorkers like their coffee SWEET. The first cup of coffee I ordered, I said "With cream and sugar" Well, they dont skimp on that either. I was hardly able to finish it, but I needed the caffeine and wasn't about to throw it away. The second cup, I asked for it the same way, thinking it was just the vendor... no, they all put too much sugar in coffee. I only drank about 1/2 of that one.

Industria Studios makes me want to work in a studio. Thats all. I can forgo a career as a photographer to work in such beautiful light, troubleshoot and rub elbows with those who utilize the studios.

The open floor at ShootNYC intimidates me, but the seminars rock. While I had no interest at looking at a $42,000 camera body, I learned that I am doing all of the things I need to do to market myself well, and I use all the right lighting set ups for head shots. Self taught all the way. I attended two seminars by a photographer named Kawai Matthews who is a photographer in Cali. She was inspiring and very likable.

Chase Jarvis. Amazing. I have been following Chase's work for a while now. I didnt know he was as well known as he is. I didnt know that I would get super excited to hear that he was in the same building as I was ("Yeah, I just saw (insert movie stars name here)" "Eh" "Chase Jarvis is HERE." "WHAT?! Where?! Seriously?!"), and I didnt know he was a cool and level headed as he is.

Over and over I heard, do what you love. Your teachers... they have no idea. Keep doing what you love, shooting what you love and you will have everything you always wanted.

Photography is EXPENSIVE.

I am a LOT older than many of my classmates. A LOT. Although I am only 28, I am a LOT LOT LOT older than some of them. Sure, I had my fair share of alcohol and inappropriate decision making experiences in my lifetime, but even then I think I was more mature than some of them. If you are irresponsible, and make poor choices, I dont think I want to rely on or wait for you. There are many types of people in this world, and I will help you out if you ask, but dont expect me to sidestep my path because you made a poor decision. And if you let your poor decisions affect me, we will have issues.

Wearing boots does not automatically mean that your feet wont get wet. or cold. or frozen. What it can mean is that you will be walking around most of the day with puddles sloshing around in your shoes. Although, the cold slush does keep your feet from swelling too much. And it possible to break or injur a middle toe even if its not stepped on or run in to.

PDN PhotoPlus East. Epic. Vendors galore. Product and equipment everywhere. An all over buzzing throughout the whole building. I just wish I had been wearing better shoes and had at some point gone by myself in addition to going with my small group that I had so much fun with.

I have no problem schmoozing. I am a fairly quiet person in new situations, but you tell me that talking to someone will help advance my career, expect a firm handshake and an introduction. Tell me what you know.

Although I LOVE to dance and miss parties such as the Scheimpflug costume party, my body no longer allows me to stay up till 5am multiple nights in a row.

My wedding band blinds me to the men checking me out.

Men still check me out... occasionally. Very surprising to me.

There are some people who would bend over backwards to help you out. Its those people I am more than willing to bend over backward to help. I am very much a "I will take care of myself" type person, but you show me that you have my best interest at heart, or someone I care about, I will watch out for you (whether you are aware of it or not.)

I do NOT like traveling in groups larger than 5 or 6. They are ALWAYS late and can NEVER make decisions.

Some people are not as cut throat as I expect them to be. I am one who if I say "you will get left behind if you are late," you will get left behind to fend for yourself. I dont coddle and I dont make exceptions.

My social anxiety it really really bad when I dont feel I am in control. I shut down and I will not come back until either I am back in control, or I am back in a familiar place.

Apparently 10 minutes is not that big of a difference in NYC. Even if you leave to catch a subway 10 or 15 minutes before everyone else, somehow, they can end up ahead of you when you get off the train. I still dont understand how that worked out.

This trip to New York was an experience that I am glad I had, it reinforced so much that I already knew about myself and about what I want. I love photography. I love this industry. I know I will have a career in it no matter what, creatively or otherwise. I do not ever want to be an early 20 something year old again. I WILL fend for myself since others cant seem to plan ahead and stay on schedule (if I ever have employees, I will be that dragon of a boss) I am definitely a virgo who harshly judges imperfection and wants it nowhere around me. I am ok with that. I hate traveling in large groups. There are impressive individuals within our department who have no idea how amazing they are. I am cut throat enough to make it in NYC, but I do not want to live in or around NYC. I LOVE my husband so very much, and love our life together, even if it is currently in Boone, NC. I no longer need to worry about my future. I AM a photographer.

I had no IDEA what I was getting myself in to when I asked Naomy to work with me in the studio. I have been in the process of developing my portfolio before I head out to the big time photography world.
She and I had never met, but I had seen photos of her from the schools model call last year, Surprisingly, she was only asked by one student to model and never heard anything more from it.
As is normal for me as a photographer and former model myself, when she stepped in front of the camera, I began directing her (most of my models are NOT professional, and therefor need direction.) I noticed immediately that she did not need my direction and was a natural in front of the camera. She helped me get so many great shots that I would never have directed her to do.

Ah... we had fun on this shoot! Girls like this, it what makes me super passionate for what I do

A story of a local student photographer in the Mountain Times. Boone, NC

Last night, after a meeting, I went to go meet my husband at his job at the local Jeep Dealership. When I got there, I was telling a few ladies about my photography when I remembered that a story on me and my work was set to come out in the local paper the next day. I turned to my husband, smiled, and whispered, "The story comes out tomorrow!" You see, although my business is run mostly on work of mouth, I have never had the publicity of a story in "The Mountain Times," a local paper here in Boone, NC. I was (and still am) super excited about it.

My husband smiled and directed my attention to the stack of papers that had already been dropped off to be opened the next morning and set out for their customers. I got super giddy, begging to go ahead at let me look through it... so he grabbed a paper and I flipped through it as quickly as I could.

I honestly had no idea what angle the story would take. You see, someone had forwarded the information on an upcoming boudoir shoot I had planned, to the editor, and he thought interviewing me on what a shoot like that takes to pull off would be interesting. I doubt that he knew at the time that I am still a student (as I try to keep my business as a business, and my personal life just that), so when he showed up to interview me, we talked about my love of photography, along with the Technical Photography Program here at Appalachian State University. We talked about why I loved photography and how I got my start. We talked about digital and photoshop vs film and darkroom processing. So by the end, I was still in the dark about what exactly the story would be on.

After I read the article, I re-read it... and then I re-read it again. This article made me see my work and my drive and passion through the eyes of Jeff Eason, the writer. And there is this little person who is now tapping me on the shoulder whispering, "Hey, you are pretty good at this thing you love. Believe it this time, ok?"

You see, more often than not, I think my work is average. Sometimes, I look at some of my classmates work and think, "are we even on the same level? Have we actually been through the same program?" And then other timesI look at peoples work such as www.JMTfoto.com or www.russharrington.com (I am ALWAYS looking at others work and how they do what they do) and think: I will never be THAT level, what I wouldn't give to assist someone with THAT eye and THAT talent.

So, needless to say, I couldn't be happier with the article and the potential for exposure this has. A BIG thank you to whomever forwarded Jeff my information, and another BIG thank you to all of you that have supported me through this dream of mine.

AH! Maternity! Oh, how I have been longing to do a maternity session. I cant tell you how excited I was when, months ago (probably 6 now) Catie told me that she and Brandon were pregnant. I had to restrain myself so that I wouldn't bounce around the local mall like a kid who was going to see santa. I asked her if she wanted maternity photos done and to make sure to call me to schedule an appointment (which is always best around the 7th month of pregnancy... so you're big and round, but you aren't uncomfortable and misshapen - sorry ladies, its the truth!) Luckily, her 7th month fell in early september, which is a beautiful time of year here in the mountains. And whats more, shooting early in the morning, like we did, means its still cool. So she and Brandon came up from the Hickory area to meet me in Blowing Rock at 9am and we immediately began at my sweet little spot on the parkway. I have said before that the light is ALWAYS beautiful at that location... and today was no exception.

Turns out, Catie is one of those pretty pregnant women, she carries her little bundle of joy right out front. I cant wait till the birth, to photograph their little one brand new to this world.

Studio Session I Boone, NC I TaraMichelle Photography

Yesterday, after assisting a new studio student on a shoot, I reserved the studio on campus for an impromptu photo session with Jacqi and Nathan. I had no real intentions with this shoot, other than to be in the studio, with my camera. Normally, when I am in the schools studio, I love using the Profoto Lights and Beauty dish, which was my original ideal set up for these two... but we have incorporated the Broncolor lights (VERY nice and high end lights) to our large studio... which the beauty dish does not attach to. So I opened up our VERY large Broncolor light to use... and... nope. The battery pack was not cooperating with me and I didnt realize it until these two showed up. So, I figited with it for a while as the two looked on in awe of the amazing light from Broncolor.... then in frustration, I gave up and decided to go old school. I broke out an Alien Bee and an Umbrella. And viola! I actually really liked this set up even though its not typical of my style. Might as well play when you have no real goal in mind huh?

So then these two were kind enough to strip down (you know how much I like to photograph the human form... its ART... I dont know why so many students are afraid of it.) The black and whites ended up being my fave from the day.

Maybe a little underwear ad feel??? Maybe.

ah, the Connor cousins (I dont know what else to call them!!!) This group came to me with a request to get some family photos as a gift to... someone. They were so great too! Family portraits can sometimes be difficult trying to pose so many different people, but this group made it so much fun. We got together in the Blowing Rock Park and moved around downtown to get the different shots that we needed... and attempt to stay out of the wind that had come in after the passing of Hurricane Irene. We had all of the cousins, their spouses and the newest of the group all the way down to the little man waiting to be born in November (stay tuned for that maternity shoot happening next week)! So great. I love my job!

This week, I had a Senior Photo session for Miss Margaret. They live near hickory, but wanted to take advantage of the cool mountain air and shoot in Blowing rock. I actually had a class with her older sister up here at Appalachian State University (who I will do a Maternity session with in late august!) When Catie called to say that her sister wanted a session for her senior portraits, I was thrilled. Not only was Margaret personable and fun, the camera LOVED her. She didn't mind that we had people watching the whole time (blowing rock was BUSY and there were two people sitting in a car watching us the whole time when we went to the parkway.) She just smiled for the camera the whole time. Such a beauty! I had a blast with this session.

Have I mentioned before that I LOVE the internet? I really do. Its a wonderful tool where you can find any information you may need! Or any professional that you may want to work with!

Nina and Steven live in Florida and come up to visit their family property in Mountain City during the summers. This couple recently had a photo session with a photographer in Florida, but also wanted to incorporate the beauty of the mountains. So Nina began her google-ing. She said she searched for two hours, only finding photographers who mostly worked in studio (have I also mentioned how much I LOVE natural light sessions?!) Then, she came across my work and contacted me!

And I am so happy she did! These two were so great to work with. At one point, I asked Steven not to smile quite so big... and they both laughed. These two are just such happy people, asking them to not smile... well, its not realistic. Happy people are the best, and when a couple can make each other laugh, it makes my job so much more fun (as if it weren't already!)

I met Landon about a year ago. Hes a student at Appalachian State University here in Boone and quite involved is so many aspects of his communications major. There have been times when he told me some project hes working on, or some instructor that he is assisting, where I think, HOW?! How do you manage to take 18 hours of classes, assist that class, work on that project, put together that function, wait tables, and still have time to cook a gourmet meal and see friends without looking like a frazzled mess? I assure you, I could never do that as gracefully as Landon does.

We've bounced photography ideas off of each another many times over the last year, yet only recently managed to schedule a time to shoot. We worked together in this field off of campus that proved to be a great place to shoot, no matter how treacherous. By the end, I looked down and had blood running down my legs... that'll teach me to show up in a field for a shoot in shorts. However, despite the blood, this shoot was a ton of fun and Landon was a trooper! I have told him before that he reminds me of James Van Der Beek when he was in Dawsons Creek in the late '90s. And yet somehow, I failed to capture that side of him.

One thing that is always a surprise to me is how differently people come across in photos, and depending on the angle and light, you can create a whole other persona. Landon was a blast to work with... and I hope that he forgives my tardiness in this posting. I am not as much of a super person as he is.

Their wedding was beautiful, full of the details a photographer loves. Each one just a little more unique than other weddings. The lace overlay of her stunning dress, the brown embroidery on the mens shirts that matched the women's dress, the way his ring, instead of being placed on his finger, was hung around his neck. The "tree" that served as a guest book, and the lavender, tied up in little pouches, ready for the send off. Even the location was picturesque overlooking the mountains on a clear day with a light breeze. These two love birds were just surrounded by beauty, and love.

I had the pleasure to meet Ashley and Ben when they came up to Boone for their engagement photos. They knew that they wanted the mountains to surround their ceremony, so why not their engagement? After a search online for photographers in the area, they found me. Ashley and Ben met at Appalachian State University and love coming back to the area. They had a location all picked out for their photo session that they love to take their two dogs to when they are here. These two are so very easy going, and very connected to each other, nature and the outdoors, which was reflected in the wedding itself. Meeting these two, anyone can see how easily they work together as a couple, and you can feel their love. Their families aren't very far off from that description either! I was instantly embraced by their family and everyone was more than friendly, even down to helping me direct people for big family group shots. I even tried to convince one family member to be my assistant at weddings! She smiled, shook her head and continued rallying family.These two have so much love and support surrounding them and their marriage.

Congratulations to Ben and Ashley. It was a true pleasure to capture your beautiful day.

I dont even know where to begin when writing about Casey. She and I have known each other for... well, as long as or longer than my husband and I have known each other. We met in High School, becoming comfortable friends, most likely due to our quiet natures and ridiculous heights (which I am only kind of kidding about.) As with many high school friendships, we drifted apart after graduation, living our own lives and having our own experiences, coming together on occasion for a photo session here or there.

And then 8 months ago, Justin proposed to Casey. She had moved back to Hendersonville and fell in love with the gym teacher at the local middle school where they both work. She called me to book their date and shoot their engagement photos. Their love is oh so obvious. In fact, while photographing their ceremony and reception, I found myself wiping away tears so that I could see well enough through the lens to capture the moment. You could feel Casey excited anticipation for the ceremony to begin, and the crowd couldn't help but give way to happy tears as Justin's' voice quivered during his vows. This couple holds so much love and devotion to one another and are completely surrounded by love in their friends and family. I am so very honored to have been a part of this special day.

Sitting here, working on this post, I am calmed and soothed by the rain and thunder outside here in Boone. I LOVE this time of year when its beautiful in the morning, and then you get a pop up afternoon thunderstorm. And this morning WAS beautiful. I had the opportunity to do a natural light session with the most recent National Miss NC winner, Lindsey Shapiro. She goes to national competition in late July in South Beach and is up for the "Most Photogenic" category.

And my oh my, is this girl photogenic! I asked her as we were shooting if she had ever considered modeling, and she stated quite shyly that she had not. In fact, the entry in to the pageant was a little bit last minute. Not only does this beauty have the looks, she is a Junior at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC double majoring in some pretty brainy stuff.... one of which is Cellular and Molecular Biology, and is a self proclaimed tom boy. Well, she's got my vote! (Not that I get one, but you know what I mean.)

Busy day with the camera! Acutually, it will be a busy MONTH here at TaraMichelle Photography.

I had 2 sessions today. The first was with Rachel Forrester, an Instructor in the English Department at AppState. She had found me when she was looking for a local photographer for some head shots she needed done. Her main concern was that she didnt want the shots to look stuffy, like so many photographers from the 80's tend to produce. With the much too harsh studio lighting and the mottled backdrop. I suggested we look at using natural light and brought up this very blog so that she could see what I was referring to. Every 2 seconds she was saying how much she liked one shot or another, or asked if we could accomplish that pose.

So here's a little sneak peak. There is more to come on the blog soon, along with a shoot I did recently with my friend Landon, and a Nude in Nature shoot I did with a client. Stay tuned!

I have been shooting a lot lately with Natural Light and I am loving it. I get on these kicks where I will shoot pretty exclusively in the Studio, and never take time to work with a Client in Natural Light.

Jeremiah contacted me recently about updating his head shots for some theater hes looking to do here. He recently moved to Boone from New York where he had pursued an acting career. When he had originally began acting, head shots were almost exclusively in black and white and in the studio. I suggested we look at doing something a little more modern and in color. Besides, when you shoot in digital in color, you can always convert to black and white for a more traditional look. We had a great time shooting today and luckily, the rain held off just long enough.

Michelle has been a favorite of mine to photograph for a few months now. Every time I have an idea of something I want to try, she is more than willing. Last time we worked together, she allowed me to PAINT her... black paint. On her very beautiful skin... black paint. She was a true trooper and we got some beautiful images from it.

This time, I wanted to head out into nature and do something a little more whimsical and introverted. We went to the parkway near Blowing Rock, constantly watching the skies as they threatened to open up and pour out. Luckily, when we got to our location and began setting up, the clouds parted and the sun came streaming in. The warmth of the morning sun fought off the cool spring breeze and provided the perfect atmosphere.

I had the opportunity to photograph and old friend in the studio a few days ago. I have known Brad for over 13 years, and even then he surprised me with the air of old Hollywood charm he brought with him. People tell me all the time, "I am not photogenic." or "Cameras hate me." I find that the more I work in the studio and with lighting and wardrobe, the more I disagree with someone when they give me one of those phrases. You can change almost anything with the right lighting, the right wardrobe, the right makeup and the right techniques on the computer. For Brad, the air of old Hollywood was even unknown to me until I sat down and began editing this photo session. He would have fit in right there with old blue eyes or leading men of the like. Give him an Uzi and a pair of suspenders and viola, it would have fit perfectly!

For a long time, I have felt that my work could use some more edge. A little more pizazz. I feel that I am talented at making people look pretty, and framing them to look attractive, but my portfolio contains no edge. So, despite needing to shoot other subjects this week, I contacted Rachel and asked her if she was interested in modeling for me. Rachel is one of those women who is beautiful in any situation, but you also know that she is someone who would kick ass if you messed with someone she cares about. We met last summer, and she mentioned that she is an aspiring photographer and wanted to learn the ropes. Being that she has a great eye herself, she made a great model. She knew what it was to connect with the the camera, and she knew how to angle her body best for the shot. I hardly had to direct her. And when I told her to give me her "eff off" look, she didn't miss a beat.

There is so much that I love about Photography. After I have done an engagement shoot with a couple so in love, out in the wonderfulness that is nature, I typically say that I, more than anything, LOVE shooting outside, working with what is given to me. When you work outside, or with people who aren't trained models, its difficult to control every aspect of the shoot. But today, I had a session in the studio. Michelle was referred to me through a follower of my work. I contacted Michelle to see if she was interested in modeling for me, simply as a way to develop my portfolio some more. I told her that I wanted to paint her, and she was all for it. I absolutely LOVE working in the studio. Every aspect can be controlled. And I love using the beauty dish.

I am SO excited with how this shoot came out. I know the modeling industry gives the air that a model has to be tall and lengthy. Sure, for runway work, but otherwise, not true. For photos and catalog, you don't have to have the height, just beautiful skin, good physique and a willingness to try new things. Michelle is that model. Beautiful, not tall, and very willing. The photo below is my tribute to Horst, a photographer who began his career in the 1940's and captured beauty so amazingly well.

I'm really attempting to update my blog more often. I promise to do better from here on out!!! I do want to mention for those of you out there who hate having your photo taken (ahem, Grooms,) you really arent the only one. Based on my experience, most men are involved in photos, engagement and otherwise, simply because they love the woman in their life and otherwise would not be caught dead in front of the camera, romping about and pretending to smile. I am very aware of this and it is my goal to make this as painless as possible for you. I hardly ever ask you to "Say Cheese!" I want you to focus on the woman you love and enjoy your afternoon with her. Justin (the groom below) was a prime example... and he told me after the shoot that I made this shoot so very easy! Thanks Justin!

This past weekend, I had an engagement session. Casey has actually become one of my regular clients. I was sure after the first few shoots with me fumbling around and barely editing early in my photography career, that she would move on to another photographer, but thankfully, she has stuck with me, and now I have to pleasure of being her engagement session photographer!!! I was so excited when Casey called me to talk about a session with her new Fiance Justin. We headed out to Highland Lake Inn to shoot in their beautiful outdoors area and had a blast. Let me say that I have known Casey for a long time and I have never seen her as happy as I saw her today with Justin. Justin proved to be one of the silently strong types and you could see the love that the two share. Congratulations to Casey and Justin. Jill has always been one of my favorite people. We have known each other since High School, and when I think back over that time, there were a handful of people who made those very turbulent years much more enjoyable. Jill is on that list. So, I was pretty much ecstatic when she asked me to photograph her wedding. You see, Jill has one of the kindest hearts you will ever find in a person and she is just so much fun to be around. She is completely down to earth and her smile is infectious. I knew her wedding day would reflect her personality in every way.

I did not have the chance to meet her soon to be husband until the day of the wedding, but I had already heard great things about him. You see, Josh happened to be my Fiances freshman during our High Schools' freshman initiation/senior appreciation day (a day when the seniors get to pick a freshman to dress up and - playfully - torment). I had already been told what a good sport he was and that he had an excellent sense of humor (he must have, in order to sport a Princess Leia wig all day!) I knew that Josh and Jill had to be a perfect match for one another.

And I was right. You could feel the love and excitement between these two as soon as you entered a room with them. The ceremony was beautiful and the reception was one of the most entertaining and enjoyable ones that I have had the pleasure of being involved with. Shannon and I attended the same high school in Hendersonville, North Carolina. She was a year ahead of me and I always knew her as an incredibly kind woman with a great smile. I highly recommend having multiple business cards for all you soon-to-be-going-out-into-the-world photographers. Its like a mini portfolio... I have spent the last year ordering multiple designs from www.Vistaprint.com (whom I HIGHLY recommend.) I can upload my own designs and get 250 cards for a very reasonable price. Picture on the front, info on the back. Mini Portfolio. :) I mean, think about it... you, as an artist, market to multiple different groups... models for headshots, newly engaged for wedding and engagement photos, new mothers for infant and family photography... and the list goes on. Now why hand a model a business card with a baby on it? Or try convincing a new mother that you will do her innocent and adorable baby justice when all you have is a business card with a half nude model.

This last weekend, I had the honor of photographing an amazing couples wedding. I didnt get the chance to meet Rebecca or John before their big day, which I usually like to do in order for the couple to become comfortable with me (before what can be a rushed and nerve wrecking day.) Rebecca actually found me through Elite Repeats Boutique, a consignment shop in Hendersonville, NC, that I had done some work for. She contacted me earlier in the summer, worried that she would never find an affordable photographer whose work she liked. After a few e-mails, it was settled, I would photograph her September 26th wedding in Maggie Valley. The forecast was for rain the entire day, it was the first true cool snap of the season and you can never predict the weather in the Mountains of NC. The fog rolled in and a fine mist covered everything. The heavy fall clouds were slowly dragging themselves over the mountain peaks, and settling into the valley. In all reality, it provided a beautiful backdrop for their covered outdoor ceremony. Upon arriving, even with the rain, Rebecca and her Mom greeted me with an air of excitement. Although Rebecca was restricted in her greeting by a hairstylist and a hot curling iron, her energy and personality instantly told me that I would enjoy photographing her on her big day. I then met John, who had a smile that could make anyone feel happy, and a quiet and strong demeanor. After the ceremony, you could see the joy and love that these two share for each other. Rebecca constantly had a smile on her face due to John and laughter bounced back and forth between the two.

I am really enjoying my 365 project. I get to try new things and experiment every day. Here are two from today's (day #12) shoot.

I also found out today that I get to take studio next semester. Basically, I wont have to feel like I am back pedaling. We get to use digital and experiment with lighting (which is what I am essentially doing on my own anyway!) I also found out that two other girls I know are also taking studio next semester, so it should be fun.

365 Project

I have gotten to know quite a few professional photographers over the past few years, many of whom, never went to school. They independently developed their talent simmering just below the surface on their own. For myself, I am more of a "show me once how to make it work and then let me have at it" type. Thats why I decided it was the best option for me to finish my degree in something that I love. So I enrolled at Appalachian State University in the Technical Photography Program. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I am having to pay my dues and start with a basic Black and White Film course. I am not complaining 100% because just from Re-Learning my old Pentax K1000, I am learning more about my digital camera. And the quality of my work is improving just from that.

However, since I am having to jump in with the beginners, I decided to kick start my creative juices with a 365 Project. Basically that means committing to taking one (or more) photo a day for a year. Most photographers use themselves as the subject in their photos. It becomes slightly more difficult to control the outcome when you're not standing behind the camera with your eye smashed into the viewfinder. You start to have to imagine what things look like as far as composition without actually seeing it yourself. Its an amazing process and you develop a whole new appreciation for the art of photography.

I havent been a fan of my body lately, so I didnt want to commit to 365 photos of ME. To I made an agreement with myself that I would take 365 photos of whatever caught my eye, and every now and again, throw myself into the mix. So far, out of the 7 days of photos I have taken, 5 have been of me.

One of my photos (which is not on my blog but you can find here: Tara:Michelle's Flickr ) is an implied nude. I wrote that "when Da Vinci sculpted and was inspired, women looked a lot differently than they do now... or rather, a lot differently than is portrayed to us through the media.Women are not supposed to be skin and bones. We are not supposed to be fat either, but women are made of curves and should embrace that side of them." I believe in this 100%. Having been a model myself, I am very harsh about my weight and my measurements today. In all reality, I am 6' tall and wear the average womans size 14. Which means that I am thinner than the average woman (who stands at 5'7" i think.)

I would love to help portray normal women in the beautiful light that the media portrays models in. Curves are beautiful, and one shouldnt have to look like a skeleton to feel attractive.

Emilie and I share a class at ASU. When I met her, I noticed that she had this fun and quirky personality, along with a free spirited and naturally beautiful look. I asked her a few weeks ago if she would be interested in allowing me to photograph her and she agreed. The weather in Blowing Rock and Boone has been erratic, so getting together on a day that was beautiful that fit both of our schedules has been challenging. We finally had the opportunity and drove to one of my favorite spots on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Not only was Emilie easy to work with, the camera loved her. I really enjoyed this shoot and here are some of my favorites.

When I moved to Boone on August 1st, I was aware that I was moving further into the mountains and that the weather would be a little more unpredictable.... however, I had no idea that I was moving during Monsoon season. Well, not really, but there has been unusually high amounts of rainfall lately. I woudl estimate that its been either cloudy, foggy or rainy at least 3/4 of the time I have been here. My photography instructor had told us that we needed to get a few rolls of film done rather quickly. Our one rule was to stay outside. But with all the fog and rain, I was having a hard time getting any contrast to my work. The days that it was sunny, I was either in class or at work.

Then 2 days ago it cleared out. It got cold, but the sun came out full force. It felt like a real fall day. After class, I grabbed both of my cameras (Film and digital) and Richie and I went to a local park to walk around and enjoy the sun. It was beautiful. After 3 shots with my old Pentax, it jammed and I was unable to fix it till I got home and had a controlled atmosphere. So instead, I worked with my digital, playing with settings and such. Funny how being in this film class is helping me to understand my digital more. I had it on full manual mode and here is what I got. My brother states that my work has "Finally come to a professional level." I am not sure how to take that comment, but its true... the following are a little more captivating to the eye... in my opinion.

When I decided to move to Boone, my boyfriend and I came out looking for places to live. We went way outside of town and checked out this one place, which ended up being awful! However, right next door, there was this wonderful tree that looked like it was about a million years old. Half was dying, but set perfectly under the living half was this old barn and ford truck. When asked to do shoot roll of anything for class, this was my first stop. Since then, I have shot a bunch of old decaying houses and buildings. My boyfriends confused as to why I like old building so much. My answer: They have character.

I finally have access to a dark room again, my favorite place in the whole world.

This was shot with my Pentax K1000 and 400 film. Processed at f/8 at 6 seconds under a filter.

Jessica has been happily married to Ronnie for over a year, but like many young couples, they were on a budget for their wedding.

She and I began talking and she was interested in doing a bridal shoot... better late than never! She was such a thrill to work with, always laughing and lighthearted. This was such a fun shoot and she was game when I suggested we do part of the shoot at Jackson steel and combine the softness of a bride with the jagged metal of a steel mill.

When I first found and fell in love with photography, I loved the photographing of people. There was something very satisfying in capturing that person in that exact moment in time. The tears of joy that came to a mothers eyes when she saw the perfect capture of her two sons, goofing off, frozen in time. A memory. Her sons would never be that age again. They would never goof off together in the kitchen like that again. They will never be interacting with each other at that age in the bottom of an empty pool in the middle of winter. One, who could model for GQ magazine, and the other, with his scruffy hair, completely down to earth and artistic. Sure, there would be other times, but nothing ever like THAT. That moment can be revisited over and over through a photograph.

I still love photographing people, it is by far, the thing that I love the most. However, I have been experimenting a little more lately with inanimate objects and lighting. I find that the final product is also satisfying... very satisfying. When the composition of an image and the lighting of that image comes out JUST right, you smile. Here are two of my most recent favorites.

A pair of leaf earring, found at a discount store in Texas. The teal coloring, paired with the gold and brushed metal was almost irresistible. But obviously only ALMOST irresistible.

A simple, yet ever so elegant necklace. Three gold painted and amber stone accented ornaments, threaded on a brown and black strand. A perfect accessory for that little black dress? How about a pair of jeans and your favorite shirt. Beautiful.

Saginaw Texas

Every few months, I take a trip to Fort Worth, Texas. My dad and step mom have lived there for many years and I truly enjoy taking trips back to the grand ol' state, not only to see family, but to remind me that I really do love the greenery of Western North Carolina.

I decided this time to make a mini vacation out of it. I brought my camera with me and was determined to use it. My dad has actually moved to Saginaw into a fairly new subdivision, out of the way of the big city. His house is as far back in this neighborhood as you can get and there is nothing but a huge open field backed up to the property. On first appearance, the field looks to be the typical, weed infested, dry grass landscape of north Texas, but if you truly look closely, you can see a lot of beautiful life among those weeds... and with the right lighting, it becomes magical.

The guests looked towards the dreary, drizzly sky. The saying was true that April showers bring may flowers, but everyone involved in Emily and Chad’s wedding had hoped that this particular April Saturday would turn out sunny and warm. The wedding was supposed to be held at 11 am, outdoors with beautiful purples accenting the crispness of the brides white, lace overlay dress. Not to mention how well the colors went with her ivory skin and red hair. Eleven O’clock rolls around and as if on cue, the rain lets up. A smile came across the brides face and her eyes lit up. It was time. The guests quickly seated themselves as the father of the bride dried off the damp seats of the horse drawn carriage staged to bring the bride to her groom. The large grey horse carried his carriage with pride and as the groom saw his soon to be wife, you could see an air of joy come over him. They joined hands and joined lives. Congratulations Emily and Chad!

I live in small town America. I have often felt that there isn't much to offer many of the 20-somethings in this retirement based community and have often dreamt of moving to the city. However, there is a lot of beauty in this area once the sun come out, or a spring storm starts rolling in over the mountains.

Wednesday, April 1st happened to combine both settings. The tulips planted all along main street had already been in bloom for a week or more. The past few days had been dreary with a much needed rain. Many were grateful for the steady drops, however, others like myself, were busy looking out their office windows, wishing for the sun.

Late on Wednesday afternoon, the sun finally made her appearance. She brightened up the little town and Main Street Hendersonville was soon bustling with people. People walking dogs. People meeting friends. People enjoying spring. Yet there, on the edge of town, you could see the storm trying to hurdle itself over the mountains. It made for perfect lighting and perfect weather to go out with my camera and capture the change of the seasons.

Tyson and April

On Saturday, March 7th, Tyson and April married. Western NC had been slammed by a snowstorm the previous weekend and it was uncertain what the property would be like for their ceremony that weekend. By a stroke of luck, their wedding happened to fall on the first warm beautiful days so far this year. Sunny, clear and 75 degrees. Perfect for an outdoor wedding.

April was giddy and constantly smiled, while Tyson continually told his groomsmen how in love he was and ready to spend his life with April. Perfect day, perfect wedding.

Nathan is a close friend of mine. After much twisting of his arm, he finally agreed to be my model for a concept I had in mind.

All of my models have been very fair, and beautiful. Smooth skin and picture perfect... But I wanted someone with a little attitude. Cast Nathan. He was great to work with. After a little hesitation, he ended up loving the shoot. He fit the character well and took on the project.

Interview

I was supposed to meet Tara of TaraMichelle Photography at a little café in Hillsboro village for our interview. I am always early, you know, for good impressions sake. Well, and to keep my job. Although I was 10 minutes early, Tara was already there, sipping on a latte and planning out her next photo shoot. I guess I was late, even though I was early. But that’s just a perfect picture of this popular photographer; early and photography on her brain.

Tara is one of the most sought after young photographers of our time. She has just been named in the top ten of Forbs most successful and artistic women of the 21st century. The term starving artist does not come into play with this woman, who, let me remind our readers, is only 29.

And yet, she is completely friendly and down to earth. As I approached the photographer, she looked up at me with a sincere smile and a warm hello. I know I was interrupting whatever creative trance she was in, but that didn’t seem to bother her. In fact, at this point, I had not introduced myself, and I don’t think she knew I was there to interview her.

After a brief introduction, I already felt as if she considered me a friend. She insisted that I call her Tara as TaraMichelle is the name of her Business. “Photography has always been my love.” She answered to my unasked question. “It almost didn’t happen.”

I looked at her quizzically at that point. “Almost didn’t happen?” I knew I was breaking the journalistic code by repeating what she just said verbatim, but I felt that she would give me the story without me really having to dig for information. She brushed her windswept hair back off of her face and smirked a bit. “Well, I guess I should tell the whole story, don’t you think?”

I felt honored; most of her interviews were conducted during a shoot. Questions were always asked while she was in the middle of editing, composing and directing. I had her full attention. I think this was a first, and I was the journalist lucky enough to ask the questions. “Go on.” I guided.

“I was given a camera, a 35mm plastic camera when I was 12. I snapped pictures everywhere I went. My poor mother was constantly developing pictures of our cat and my brothers. There was nothing worth publishing, nothing artistic about any of it, but she kept taking that film to be developed. Then in High School, I signed up for the photography class my senior year and my mom gave me her Pentax 35mm K1000. That was it, I was truly hooked, and my skills began to develop, at least until my career guidance counselor got a hold of me.” She sipped her latte and flipped through a few concepts that she was working on.

“What happened with your counselor?” I asked.

“She told me that I had better choose another career path because I would never make it as a Photographer.” I sat there in awe for a second. I couldn’t believe someone would have told this extremely successful artist that she would never make it. “Really?” Was all I could get out. I knew that my journalism career was on the line at this point. I flipped thorough my notes of all the information I wanted to be sure to get.

She continued on without me. “So I began thinking that I would just go into Marketing, or maybe PR. Something that’s guaranteed to be successful. It wasn’t really something I loved though, so when I turned 25 and I saw all my friends had graduated from college and were buying houses, I decided to finally follow my dream. What did my career counselor know about me anyway? She had never even seen any of my work. I began working for free, shooting with the Pentax that my mother had given me years before. I accepted a donation if someone was truly happy with the product, but I didn’t require money. I have to admit that I was not happy with my early work. Other people seemed to like the picture that they got, but I saw so much more that I could learn. I knew I could produce a better product. So I finally purchased a basic Digital SLR. Film was severely out of date and I needed to step up my game I if I was going to have a career in Photography. I slowly began having more and more paying clients and people began talking.”

"What do you consider to be the jump off point to your success? " was my next question.

“Soon after Obama took over office in Washington, I received a call from one of his secretaries. We all heard on the news about how he had adopted a puppy for his daughters, it had been a big to do about what kind of dog they would get. Somehow he had been given my name and had seen my work and asked me to come document an afternoon of his daughters playing with their new puppy. He didn't want some photojournalist from a newspaper trying to gather more information than was offered. He wanted that personal feel to the photos of his family. I was flown up to DC and had the privilege of spending two days with the Obamas. That one job was my big start. It’s all history after that.”

She had finished her latte and I knew at that point that the interview was over. The rest of her career has already been followed and documented. She had just given me a look into how her dreams developed into a reality. I felt as if I had just had a relaxing catch-up coffee session with a dear friend. No wonder she’s successful, her work is astounding and her attitude is unassuming and friendly.

Old Friend

Last weekend, I had what I considered to be a privilege, to photograph an old friend of mine. She and I have known each other for about 10 years now, and she constantly takes pictures of her adorable son. She never saw how photogenic she was. I asked her to let me do her makeup and a shoot. She finally agreed and I think they came out fantastically!

Every year, the city of Hendersonville hosts a rather large Christmas Parade. This year, it ran for over an hour. While I was somewhat interested in the parade, I was more interested in the people at the parade. This is Riley. He couldnt wait to see his friend who was going to be in the parade with is boy scout troop.

It was freezing that day, and since his dad runs a firm on main street, he could have sat inside with a hot cup of cocoa, but he wanted to be out there to see his friend.
